Nagpur: A major tragedy was averted in the city on Tuesday, June 3, after a petrol tanker belonging to Reliance Industries Limited rammed into a newly installed height barrier while attempting to ascend the Sitabuldi Flyover from the Rahate Colony side.
The tanker, carrying approximately 23,000 litres of highly flammable fuel, struck the height restriction barrier in the afternoon, causing alarm among commuters. Fortunately, the vehicle did not overturn, there was no leakage, and no fire broke out—averting what could have been a catastrophic explosion in a densely populated area.
The height barrier, recently installed to restrict the entry of heavy and oversized vehicles onto the flyover, absorbed the impact and prevented the tanker from proceeding further. The incident highlighted potential lapses in driver awareness and signage visibility on approach routes to the flyover.
Following the mishap, Sitabuldi traffic police rushed to the spot and temporarily closed the flyover for safety inspection and vehicle clearance. No injuries were reported.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine whether negligence or miscommunication led to the tanker taking the restricted route.
