Nagpur: In a major road-safety push, Nagpur Traffic Police led by Deputy Commissioner of Police Lohit Matani, have widened their nakabandi (checkpoint) operations to run daily from 8 a.m. to 2 a.m. across 90 rotating locations, strengthening enforcement against drunk driving, rash driving and other traffic offences.
The move builds on the success of Operation U-Turn, launched on July 10, 2025, which delivered a sharp drop in road fatalities and serious injuries.
Traffic officials said the expanded plan will make checkpoints unpredictable, covering residential areas, arterial roads, nightlife hubs and accident-prone stretches to prevent motorists from dodging checks.
Key Measures:
- Timing & Reach: 18-hour nakabandi at 90 rotating points.
- Strict DUI Checks: Breath analysers to detect alcohol impairment; repeat offenders tracked in a central database and prosecuted under the Motor Vehicles Act.
- Mobile Patrols: Quick-response teams to intercept drivers taking detours or sudden U-turns.
- Zero Tolerance: No on-the-spot settlements; serious or repeat violators face tougher legal action.
Besides drunk driving, teams will crack down on rash or wrong-side driving, triple-seat riding, helmetless riders, unpermitted heavy vehicles, and auto-rickshaws without valid permits.
Senior traffic officials said the wider timetable is designed to sustain the lifesaving impact of Operation U-Turn. Citizens are urged to use cabs or public transport if drinking, carry valid documents, and report reckless driving to the police control room.
