Nagpur: The city was left stunned after the kidnapping and murder of 14-year-old Atharva Nanore during a Hanuman Jayanti Shobha Yatra came to light, triggering outrage among residents.

According to police, the accused — Jay Ramgopal Yadav (19), Ketan alias Kunal Ramesh Sahu (22), and Ayush Mohan Sahu (19) — allegedly abducted the minor from the religious procession with the intention of extorting money from his family. As soon as Atharva’s family realised he was missing, they immediately began circulating his photographs on social media in an effort to trace him.

Alleging police negligence, family members and local residents staged protests in the Gittikhadan area, demanding swift action.

During investigation, police found that the accused were aware of the family’s financial condition and were planning to demand a ransom of ₹50 lakh. However, after Atharva’s photographs went viral shortly after the abduction, the accused reportedly panicked, fearing imminent police action.

In a shocking turn of events, they allegedly strangled the minor to death and later dumped his body in the jurisdiction of Kamleshwar police station.

Acting swiftly, Gittikhadan Police along with the Crime Branch launched an intensive probe and arrested all three accused. The incident has sparked widespread anger, with locals demanding the strictest possible punishment, including capital punishment for the accused.

The brutal crime has once again raised serious concerns over public safety during large religious gatherings. Further investigation is underway, and police officials have assured that the case will be pursued with utmost seriousness.
