Nagpur: A portion of a newly constructed Railway Overbridge (ROB) in Gavlipura, Yadav Nagar area of Kamptee, has reportedly caved in even before it was officially inaugurated, raising serious concerns over the quality of construction and supervision.
The damage came to light on July 9 when a local resident shared a video on social media showing visible craters and depressions that had formed on the bridge surface following recent heavy rainfall. The footage has since gone viral, sparking public anger and demanding answers from authorities.
Although the bridge was yet to be opened for public use, the premature damage has exposed what many believe to be glaring lapses in construction standards, planning, and oversight. Locals fear that the incident could be a sign of deeper structural flaws that might lead to a catastrophic failure if left unaddressed.
“This is taxpayers’ money, and we expect safety and transparency. How can a bridge sink even before it opens?” questioned a local resident, echoing the frustration of many in the area.
Civic activists and residents have now called for an immediate structural audit by an independent agency and strict action against the contractors and officials involved in the project. Many are demanding that the tendering and construction processes be made public to ensure accountability.
The sinking of the ROB has also reignited debates over the quality control of public infrastructure projects in Nagpur district, where several past incidents have similarly drawn criticism.
As of now, no official statement has been issued by the concerned authorities. Meanwhile, residents are urging swift remedial action to prevent further damage and ensure public safety.
