Nagpur : In a bid to streamline traffic and instill disciplined parking habits among citizens, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has marked over 17,000 designated spots for vehicle parking across key city roads. The initiative includes more than 13,500 spaces for two-wheelers and 4,000 for four-wheelers, under the city’s expanding street parking project.
Implemented under the guidance of Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Dr. Abhijit Chaudhari, the project aims to reduce chaotic parking practices that often contribute to congestion. As part of the initiative, 51 prominent locations across 75 surveyed roads have been finalized for street parking. These designated areas have been demarcated with white lines—angled markings on wider roads and parallel lines on narrower ones.
Each parking slot has been sized appropriately—1m x 2.5m for two-wheelers and 5m x 2.5m for four-wheelers, ensuring optimal usage of available road space. The initiative has received a positive response from vehicle owners, according to NMC officials.
According to Executive Engineer Ravindra Bundhade, the NMC had earlier conducted joint inspections with the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) at various city locations to assess parking requirements. Based on this survey, the white markings were implemented to promote orderliness and make more pedestrian space available.
NMC officials believe the move will significantly ease vehicular movement and encourage citizens to utilize designated parking slots. It will also reduce illegal roadside parking and enhance pedestrian safety, as freed-up spaces will allow for smoother foot traffic.
The NMC has appealed to citizens to cooperate by parking only in marked zones and adhering to traffic regulations for the betterment of city infrastructure and traffic discipline.
