Nagpur: A minor argument during a drinking session escalated into a violent attack on a jeweller at a bar near Telephone Exchange Square in Nagpur, leaving him seriously injured. Four to five unidentified youths allegedly assaulted the businessman, smashed a beer bottle on his head, and attacked him with an iron rod in an attempt to kill him.
The incident took place on Sunday evening at Halba Bar under the jurisdiction of Lakadganj Police Station, creating a stir in the area.
The complainant has been identified as Rupesh Atmaram Soni (53), a resident of Itwari who runs a jewellery shop at Tanga Stand Square. According to police, Soni had visited Halba Bar around 5 pm for a drink. He was seated with his acquaintance, Vivek Prakash Jain, and the two were engaged in conversation.
At a nearby table, four young men were also consuming alcohol. During the conversation, the youths allegedly objected to Soni and Jain speaking loudly and asked them to lower their voices. Soni reportedly apologised, and after settling the bill, he left the bar.
However, the situation turned violent outside the establishment. As Soni exited, one of the accused allegedly abused him and suddenly smashed a beer bottle on his head. The impact caused severe bleeding from his head.
Police said that while Soni was attempting to reach the washroom to clean the wound, another youth forcibly pulled him. Fearing for his life, he tried to escape, but the accused allegedly chased and caught him.
One of the attackers, described as wearing a white half-sleeve shirt and grey shorts, then allegedly struck Soni three to four times on the head with an iron rod. During the assault, the accused reportedly shouted that they would not let the elderly man leave alive.
Following the attack, the accused fled the spot. Soni was rushed to a hospital for treatment, where he is undergoing medical care.
Based on his complaint, Lakadganj Police have registered a case against the unidentified accused. Efforts are underway to identify and apprehend the attackers, while further investigation into the incident is in progress.
