Nagpur: In a major crackdown on drug trafficking, Nagpur Police seized 7.5 kilograms of mephedrone (MD) valued at approximately Rs 2.25 crore from a rented flat in Uppalwadi and arrested an alleged member of an interstate narcotics network.
The accused, identified as Majhar Ali Akbar Ali (35), was apprehended during a joint operation conducted by teams from Jaripatka and Kapil Nagar police stations on Sunday. Acting on specific intelligence, police raided the rented flat and recovered 14 packets containing the banned synthetic drug.
According to police, the seized consignment was allegedly transported to Nagpur from three districts in Uttar Pradesh through train and bus routes. Preliminary investigations indicate that the accused was functioning as a middleman in the drug supply chain.
Addressing a press conference on Monday, Nagpur Police Commissioner Ravinder Kumar Singal described the seizure as a significant achievement under the city’s ongoing anti-drug campaign. He said the operation had prevented a large quantity of narcotics from reaching the streets and targeting the youth.
“We are determined to break every link in the drug supply chain, from suppliers and transporters to local distributors,” Singal said. He added that investigators are tracing the source of the contraband and identifying all individuals associated with the network. More arrests are likely as the probe progresses.
Police revealed that the mephedrone consignment was intended to be distributed among seven individuals, including four recipients within Nagpur city and three in rural areas. Investigators suspect the network was actively supplying drugs across Nagpur and nearby districts.
Though Majhar Ali resided with his family in Azad Nagar, he had separately rented the Uppalwadi flat, which police believe was being used as a storage and distribution point for narcotics. Authorities suspect he may have been involved in multiple drug supply operations in the region.
A case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at Jaripatka Police Station. Further investigation is underway to uncover the interstate links of the racket and identify other members of the network.
