Nagpur: In a major step towards promoting outdoor sports and revitalizing underutilized spaces, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has developed basketball courts, green gyms, and landscaped recreational zones beneath several flyovers across the city. This initiative aims to encourage youth to engage in outdoor games and adopt healthier lifestyles, moving away from excessive mobile phone usage.

Several flyovers, including those at Dighori, Narendra Nagar, Sakkardara, Mehndibagh, and Dahi Bazaar, have undergone transformation. Spaces that were once neglected are now thriving with greenery, vibrant murals, and modern sports facilities. Under the Dighori flyover, a full-fledged basketball court and skating rink have been constructed. Similarly, a spacious sports ground is being developed beneath the Narendra Nagar flyover for the city’s youth.

These beautification projects have turned previously barren or encroached spaces into vibrant community hubs. Citizens have welcomed these developments, expressing joy at the availability of clean, safe, and creative recreational zones in their localities.

Under the guidance of Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Dr. Abhijit Chaudhari, NMC has also undertaken extensive landscaping and mural work as part of the G-20 city improvement initiatives. Notable among these is the transformation of the wall of Jayprakash Nagar Metro Station with eye-catching graffiti, including murals of bicycles, women, tigers, oranges, plants, and wildlife — all symbolic of Nagpur’s identity as the “Tiger Capital” and “Orange City.” These artworks have established a new visual landmark along Wardha Road.

The Dighori flyover area has been cleared of encroachments and now features organized seating areas, including waiting spaces for families of hospital patients. Similarly, the Sakkardara and Mehndibagh flyovers have been developed with shaded seating, colorful art pillars, and artistic MS umbrella installations in rainbow hues, offering citizens peaceful spots to unwind.

In Mehndibagh, the transformation is particularly impactful, providing much-needed green space and seating for residents of the densely populated locality. Flyover pillars have been designed to resemble trees, enhancing aesthetic appeal while serving a functional purpose.

The Dahi Bazaar flyover — located in a bustling commercial area — has been turned into a serene resting zone for shoppers and vendors. The pillars here have also been artistically crafted to resemble trees, contributing to the area’s overall tranquility.

Thanks to these efforts by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation, neglected corners of the city have been given a new lease of life. Beyond mere beautification, these spaces now foster positive, vibrant, and inclusive community experiences for citizens of all ages.
