Mumbai: The Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway has detected lakhs of speeding and other traffic violations over the past year, generating 27.76 lakh e-challans worth a staggering ₹470 crore since July 2024. However, recovery has been dismal, with fines worth only ₹51 crore collected so far.

According to the Maharashtra transport department, cars were the biggest offenders, racking up over 17.20 lakh e-challans for overspeeding and other violations on the 95-km stretch. Heavy goods carriers followed with 3.27 lakh e-challans, while heavy passenger vehicles such as buses accounted for 2.48 lakh challans.

Taxis faced 2 lakh challans, light goods carriers 1.2 lakh, medium goods vehicles 85,468, articulated heavy goods vehicles 30,450, and medium passenger buses 14,764.

The ITMS, equipped with high-definition cameras and automated number plate recognition technology, was introduced to improve road safety, monitor speed limits, and enforce rules more effectively. Authorities have expressed concern over the low fine recovery rate despite extensive surveillance and automated enforcement.
