Nagpur: A 51-year-old man drowned in a water-filled quarry near Wadi on October 28 while attempting to immerse ritual offerings (nirmalya) on his way to celebrate Bhai Dooj with his wife.
According to police, the deceased Prakash Govindrao Akhand, a resident of Plot No. 89, Jijamata Nagar, Kharbi Road, Wathoda, was traveling with his wife Kavita Akhand (49) to Gondkhairi, Wadi, to attend a family event. On spotting a quarry filled with water near Outdoor Hotel, Amravati-Nagpur Road, Akhand stepped into the water to immerse ritual materials.
However, he lost balance and fell into the deep water. Since he did not know how to swim, he drowned before help could arrive. Local residents and fire brigade personnel later retrieved his body and rushed him to Mayo Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Based on the complaint filed by his wife, API Kothe of Wadi Police Station registered a case of accidental death. Further investigation is underway.
