Nagpur: As Holi celebrations gather pace in Nagpur, a noticeable gap between the number of events being promoted and the official permissions granted by authorities has raised concerns over possible unauthorised parties in the city.
Social media platforms and local event organisers have been actively advertising Holi bashes, DJ nights, rain dances and poolside celebrations across various venues. However, official figures paint a different picture. According to police sources, only eight applications seeking permission for Holi-related events have been received so far. Similarly, the State Excise Department has reported receiving just five applications for temporary one-day liquor permits.
Senior police officials confirmed that enforcement agencies are closely monitoring the situation. Special squads have been constituted to conduct surprise inspections and keep a check on any unauthorised gatherings during the festive period. Authorities have made it clear that strict legal action will be initiated against organisers found hosting events without mandatory approvals.
To ensure public safety, extensive checkpoints will be set up across the city to curb incidents of drunk driving. Police teams will carry out intensified patrolling, particularly around popular celebration spots and major traffic junctions.
Officials from the Excise Department stated that while only five applications for one-day liquor permits have been received so far, the number could increase as the festival approaches, as organisers often apply closer to the event date. As per regulations, any organiser planning to serve liquor at a public event must obtain a temporary permit in addition to securing police clearance for the gathering.
The apparent mismatch between widespread event promotions and limited official permissions has sparked speculation about the possibility of unauthorised celebrations being planned. Authorities have urged citizens and event planners to strictly adhere to legal requirements to ensure safe and orderly festivities.
With enforcement teams on alert and checks set to intensify, officials have cautioned that any violations during Holi will invite stringent action under the law.
