Nagpur, February 11, 2026: In a major push towards digital transformation in power distribution, Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL), popularly known as Mahavitaran, has installed advanced ‘Smart TOD (Time of Day)’ meters for 5,62,186 electricity consumers across the Nagpur region.
The move is aimed at ensuring accurate billing while offering substantial tariff concessions to consumers who use electricity during designated daytime hours.
Accurate Billing, No More Estimated Charges
The Smart TOD meters are fully digital and eliminate the need for manual meter reading. Electricity consumption data is automatically transmitted to the central system, bringing an end to issues related to ‘average’ or ‘estimated’ bills.
These meters operate on a postpaid system, and consumers will continue to pay their monthly bills as per the existing billing cycle. Importantly, Mahavitaran has clarified that no loan has been taken for the project, as it is being implemented with financial assistance from the Central Government. Consumers are not required to pay any additional charges or security deposit for installation.
Chief Engineer of Nagpur Region, Dilip Dodke, has appealed to consumers not to fall prey to rumours, stating that replacing old meters is a routine technical process.
Daytime Power Usage to Fetch Direct Discount
One of the key benefits of the Smart TOD meters is the electricity tariff discount linked to time-based consumption. As per a decision implemented from July 1, 2025, residential consumers using electricity between 9 am and 5 pm are eligible for a rebate ranging from 80 paise to ₹1 per unit.
For instance, if a consumer uses 100 units per month and primarily consumes electricity during daytime hours, a bill of ₹875 could reduce to approximately ₹784 after applying the TOD rebate.
Consumers can also monitor their hourly electricity usage through Mahavitaran’s dedicated mobile application, enabling better control over consumption and savings.
Installation Figures Across Nagpur Division
Out of the total 5.62 lakh smart meters installed in the Nagpur region:
- Nagpur City Division: 3,01,313 meters
- Nagpur Rural Division: 1,52,571 meters
- Wardha Division: 1,08,302 meters
The Smart TOD meters will also benefit consumers installing rooftop solar systems under the ‘Pradhan Mantri Suryaghar Free Electricity Scheme’, as the meters are equipped with net metering functionality.
Mahavitaran has stated that the initiative aims to enhance transparency in billing and provide direct financial relief to consumers. The power utility has urged residents to adopt the new technology and optimise their electricity usage to reduce monthly bills.
