Mehkar: A serious road accident occurred on the Samruddhi Expressway near Mehkar in Maharashtra during the early hours of Sunday when a private passenger bus rammed into the rear of an unidentified truck. A total of 27 passengers were injured in the crash, including 15 who sustained serious injuries and 12 who suffered minor injuries. The injured were rushed to the Rural Hospital in Mehkar for treatment, while some were later shifted by relatives to private hospitals and other medical facilities for further care.
According to information received, the accident took place shortly before 4:21 a.m. on June 8, 2025, on the Nagpur corridor of the Samruddhi Expressway near Channel No. 278.800, under the jurisdiction of Mehkar Police Station.
The private bus (Registration No. MH 31 FC 7468) was travelling from Pune to Nagpur with passengers on board when the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the rear of an unidentified truck moving ahead. Following the collision, the truck driver fled the scene along with the vehicle.
After receiving information from the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Control Room, a police team led by Sub-Inspector Arvind Tirankar of the Samruddhi Expressway Fardapur Sub-Centre, along with Mehkar Police Inspector Venkateshwar Alewar, Sub-Inspector Kanchan Jarwal, and other police personnel, reached the spot within eight minutes at approximately 4:30 a.m.
Considering the severity of the accident, emergency 108 ambulance services were immediately deployed. Local social worker and journalist Santosh Malose also played a significant role in the rescue and relief operations.
All injured passengers were admitted to the Mehkar Rural Hospital. Treatment was provided under the supervision of Medical Superintendent Dr. Sunita Hivase and Medical Officer Dr. Gunwant Shelke, along with a team of doctors including Dr. Swapnil Susar, Dr. Vaibhav Borade, Dr. Yasin Shah, Dr. Adil Khan, and Dr. Ganesh Shelke. Ambulance drivers and support staff also assisted in the emergency response.
The injured passengers include residents from Nagpur, Pune, Chandrapur, Buldhana, Beed, Khaparkheda, and Ahilyanagar, among other locations.
Following the accident, police used a crane to remove the damaged bus from the roadway and restore smooth traffic movement on the expressway. By 9:00 a.m., all necessary procedures at the accident site had been completed. Mehkar Police have launched an investigation into the incident and are working to identify the truck and its driver.
Authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution while driving on high-speed corridors such as the Samruddhi Expressway, particularly during early morning hours when visibility and driver alertness may be reduced.
