Nagpur: A 21-year-old man died after allegedly consuming poison with his girlfriend following their families' opposition to their marriage in Nagpur's Wanadongri area, while the young woman survived after timely medical treatment and was discharged from the hospital on Tuesday.

The deceased has been identified as Vishal Vilas Jawade (21), a resident of Wanadongri, who worked in mandap decoration and also drove an auto-rickshaw. His 20-year-old girlfriend, who had also consumed poison, was successfully treated at Shalinitai Meghe Hospital and discharged after her condition improved.

According to MIDC Police, the couple had been in a relationship for nearly four years and wished to marry. They had informed their respective families about their decision, but both families reportedly refused to approve the alliance. The disagreement allegedly escalated into a heated argument between the two families on Sunday.

Police said that on Monday afternoon, the couple went to an open ground near the Wanadongri–Sangam village road, where they allegedly consumed poison they had brought with them.

Soon after, their health deteriorated and passers-by rushed them to Shalinitai Meghe Hospital. Despite prolonged treatment, Vishal succumbed to poisoning at around 11 pm on Monday. Doctors, however, managed to save the young woman, whose condition improved significantly, allowing her to be discharged on Tuesday.

Following the incident, MIDC Police reached the hospital, conducted the necessary legal formalities and sent Vishal's body for post-mortem examination.

Police have registered a case of accidental death and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. Preliminary inquiries indicate that the couple's alleged suicide attempt was triggered by persistent opposition from their families to their marriage.
