Nagpur: Following the shocking incident of molestation and theft at the government-run OBC Girls’ Hostel near IC Square on Hingna Road, the authorities have terminated the services of the hostel’s warden and security guard. The decision comes after a departmental inquiry revealed gross negligence in ensuring the safety of the residents.

The action was confirmed through an official press release by Vijay Wakulkar, Regional Deputy Director, Other Backward Class Welfare Department (Nagpur). He stated that both staffers, who were employed on a contractual basis, have been removed from service with immediate effect. The department has also initiated a statewide review of hostel security across all such government-run facilities to prevent recurrence of similar incidents.

The incident took place around 3 am on July 23, when two unidentified men gained unauthorized entry into the newly opened hostel. They forcibly entered a room and attempted to molest an engineering student. When the girl raised an alarm, the intruders snatched her mobile phone and fled. The case was reported to MIDC Police Station around 8 am and an FIR was filed under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for molestation and theft.

Initial investigation revealed glaring security lapses. The hostel, which houses several young women, lacked basic safety infrastructure such as CCTV surveillance, dedicated night guards, and a functional emergency response system. It also emerged that the intruders accessed the building through an emergency staircase, the lock of which had been broken three days earlier and never replaced.

Residents and locals have expressed outrage over the administration’s failure to implement basic safety protocols in a government facility meant for vulnerable students. Allegations of contractual irregularities and oversight failures have further intensified the public demand for accountability.

Police are continuing efforts to identify and arrest the intruders, while the welfare department has pledged stricter monitoring and immediate rectification of security flaws in all similar institutions.
