Nagpur: A potentially dangerous incident was averted on Monday evening when a venomous snake emerged from a moving scooter in the city. The incident occurred around 6.15 pm on December 15, 2025, when Mohammad Nasir Sheikh, a resident of Taj Nagar, was riding his Activa scooter (MH-49 BJ 8169) towards Tukdoji Putla.
While riding, Sheikh noticed a snake slithering out from the scooter’s headlight area. He immediately pulled over to the roadside and was shocked to see the snake moving near the handle of the vehicle. Acting swiftly, he informed Anand Shelke, a member of the Wildlife Welfare Society.
On receiving the alert, Shelke deputed snake rescuer Aditya Shastrakar to the spot. The situation turned tense when the snake was identified as a highly venomous saw-scaled viper (locally known as Furse), one of the four venomous snake species commonly found in the region. After carefully dismantling parts of the scooter, Shastrakar safely rescued the snake, much to the relief of onlookers. The reptile was later released into a forested area.
Explaining the risk, Nitish Bhandakkar, Secretary of the Wildlife Welfare Society, said the saw-scaled viper belongs to the viper family and carries hemotoxic venom. “Though small in size, its bite can be fatal if timely medical treatment is not provided,” he warned.
Bhandakkar added that during winter, snakes often seek warmth and may crawl into parked vehicles. He advised citizens to check their vehicles before riding and avoid parking near garbage dumps or secluded areas to prevent such incidents.
