Wardha, 22 July 2025: The Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery (CVTS) Department at Acharya Vinoba Bhave Rural Hospital, Sawangi (Meghe), Wardha, has successfully performed a rare and complex thoracic surgery, giving a new lease of life to a 58-year-old patient.

Mr. Dinesh Waghmare (Name Changed), a resident of Nandha, was recently admitted with complaints of dyspnoea and breathlessness on exertion. A known case of hypertension and pleural effusion, he was diagnosed with a splitting pleural tumour that had severely restricted his lung function and overall quality of life.

The tumour, measuring approximately 24 x 11 x 16 cm, was found to be firmly adhered to major thoracic structures, including the superior and inferior vena cava (SVC and IVC), diaphragm, and the spinal process, making it a high-risk surgical case.

The excision surgery was successfully carried out under the leadership of Dr. Vivek Lanje, Cardiothoracic Surgeon at Acharya Vinoba Bhave Rural Hospital, with expert support from Dr. Bhakti Patil, Anaesthetist, and the dedicated CVTS team.

“This was a challenging case due to the tumour's deep adhesions to vital thoracic structures. The patient’s lung was compressed, but we are pleased to report that complete excision was achieved with full lung expansion post-surgery. Mr. Waghmare tolerated the procedure very well and is recovering steadily,” said Dr. Vivek Lanje.

Following a smooth and uneventful recovery, the patient was discharged. The surgery was conducted under the S.O. (Surgery Operation) Scheme.
