Nagpur: Residents of Kamptee are likely to experience a quieter atmosphere for religious observances after firm directions issued by the Bombay High Court on noise pollution prompted decisive action by local law enforcement authorities.

Acting in compliance with the court’s order, police in both New and Old Kamptee initiated a structured outreach programme, issuing public notices to religious institutions and convening meetings with community leaders and peace committee members. The initiative was aimed at ensuring adherence to legal norms while maintaining communal harmony.

Under the revised enforcement framework, prior written permission from the competent authority has been made compulsory for the installation or operation of loudspeakers and public address systems at religious premises. Authorities have directed that all unauthorised loudspeakers be removed within seven days, failing which they will be confiscated and legal proceedings initiated against the responsible parties.

The guidelines also stipulate that even authorised loudspeakers must not be installed at a height exceeding 15 feet from ground level without special approval. Furthermore, sound systems must be oriented inward toward the premises and must not project noise toward public roads or adjoining residential areas.

Inspector Mahesh Andhale of New Kamptee police station said sustained dialogue with religious heads played a crucial role in achieving compliance. According to police data, 63 religious establishments — including temples, viharas, mosques and madrasas — fall under the station’s jurisdiction. Following direct communication regarding the court’s directives, 55 loudspeakers have already been voluntarily removed, with the remaining installations expected to be dismantled shortly.

Meanwhile, Inspector Prashant Jumade of Old Kamptee police station confirmed that notices have been served to more than two dozen religious institutions in his jurisdiction. He noted that community cooperation has significantly eased implementation of the directives.

Police officials expressed confidence that the coordinated effort will help ensure adherence to noise pollution norms while enabling citizens to practise their faith in a peaceful and law-abiding manner.
