Nagpur: The historic Sitabuldi Fort in Nagpur was opened to the public on the occasion of India’s 77th Republic Day, attracting a record footfall of approximately 37,000 visitors in a single day.

The rare public access offered citizens an opportunity to explore one of Central India’s most significant military and historical landmarks. The fort was last opened to the general public on August 15, 2025, when nearly 28,000 people visited the heritage site.

Authorities ensured tight security and smooth crowd management during the event. Large contingents from the Indian Army, Nagpur Police, and Traffic Police were deployed, demonstrating strong coordination between military and civil administration. Visitors expressed appreciation for the Army’s hospitality and the well-organized arrangements.

A Fort Steeped in History

Sitabuldi Fort was constructed in 1817 following the historic Battle of Sitabuldi, a key conflict in the Third Anglo-Maratha War that marked a turning point in the decline of the Maratha Empire. Located atop twin hillocks in the heart of Nagpur, the fort has witnessed significant chapters of India’s military and colonial history.

Today, the fort stands as a reminder of the Marathas’ resistance against colonial forces and their final struggle for sovereignty. It currently houses the headquarters of the Uttar Maharashtra and Gujarat Sub Area, which oversees military operations in parts of Maharashtra and Gujarat.

Heritage Attractions Inside the Fort

The fort complex features several heritage structures and historical relics, including:

  • Old military barracks
  • Vintage cannons
  • War memorials
  • A historic cell where Mahatma Gandhi was briefly detained during the freedom movement

Visitors also enjoyed panoramic views of prominent city landmarks such as Zero Mile, Civil Lines, Freedom Park, and Central Nagpur from the fort premises.

The special Republic Day opening once again highlighted Sitabuldi Fort’s cultural and historical importance while strengthening public engagement with India’s military heritage.
