Nagpur: In a significant move to curb the growing misuse of children in criminal activities, the Zone 4 police have launched a special drive under the newly enforced provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). The action has been initiated under the directives of Deputy Commissioner of Police Rashmitha Rao, targeting adult offenders who deliberately involve minors in unlawful acts.
According to official data, in 2026 alone, six police stations under Zone 4 registered 10 cases where adults were found to have used children in conflict with law to commit offences. These include three cases at Nandanvan-Hudkeshwar police station, two at Beltarodi, and one each at Ajni, Sakkardara, and Imamwada police stations.
Investigations revealed that 18 adult accused persons used 14 minors while executing criminal acts.
Taking serious note of the matter, police have invoked Section 95 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita in all 10 cases. The provision mandates stringent punishment for adults who engage minors in criminal activities. Under Section 95 of BNS, a minimum mandatory sentence of three years has been prescribed, with no provision for awarding a lesser punishment. Officials believe this strong legal framework will serve as a deterrent and instill fear among offenders exploiting children for crime.
The 10 offences in which Section 95 has been added include:
- 3 cases of vehicle theft
- 2 cases of housebreaking
- 2 cases of causing hurt
- 2 cases of sexual harassment involving minors
- 1 case of rioting
In addition, authorities have initiated preventive action against the parents of the minors involved. Proceedings have been undertaken under Section 136(C) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, fixing responsibility on guardians to monitor and regulate their children’s conduct. Bonds are being obtained from parents to ensure vigilance and accountability.
Senior officials expressed confidence that the robust implementation of new criminal laws in Zone 4 will significantly reduce juvenile involvement in organised crime. The police machinery has reiterated its commitment to maintaining law and order and assured that strict action will continue against those attempting to misuse children for unlawful gains.
