Nagpur: Nagpur, the hometown of Maharashtra’s Chief Minister, is witnessing an alarming surge in housebreak incidents, averaging nearly three burglaries per day in the first half of 2025. Official records reveal that 488 housebreaking cases were reported between January and June 29, yet Nagpur Police have managed to solve only 132 cases — reflecting a low detection rate of just 27%.

In 2024, the city registered a total of 1,000 burglary cases, marking a 10% rise from 914 cases in 2023. If the current trend continues, the 2025 figures are expected to surpass last year’s total. Areas under Hudkeshwar, Beltarodi, Wathoda, MIDC, and Kalamna police stations have emerged as the worst-hit zones.

May and June 2025 have been particularly concerning, with 111 and 102 cases registered respectively. Officials attribute this spike to the summer vacation and wedding season, during which many families leave their homes unattended. In several instances, thefts occurred even while residents were at home — with the noise of coolers drowning out the sound of break-ins.

A major hindrance in cracking these cases remains the lack of CCTV surveillance in many residential colonies. Police have flagged this issue in crime-prone zones like Beltarodi, MIDC, Wathoda, Pardi, Kalamna, and Hingna.

Authorities are also urging citizens to exercise caution on social media. Posting real-time updates of vacations and out-of-town travel can unknowingly alert burglars. Police recommend sharing travel photos only after returning home to avoid becoming a target.

With valuables worth crores already stolen in the first half of the year, officials are now pushing for improved security measures and community vigilance to curb the growing menace.
