Nagpur: A man allegedly attempted self-immolation in front of Nagpur Railway Station on Tuesday while opposing an anti-encroachment drive by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC). However, timely intervention by alert police personnel saved his life.

According to officials, the NMC team was conducting an encroachment removal operation against unauthorized tea and paan stalls near the railway station. During the action, one of the stall owners strongly protested and attempted to set himself ablaze.

Police personnel from the Headquarters, who were assisting the NMC team, immediately rushed forward and stopped him before he could cause harm. Their swift and courageous action prevented a possible tragedy. The man was later handed over to the local police station for further legal proceedings.

The incident briefly created tension in the area but the situation was quickly brought under control by the police.

NMC has been carrying out regular anti-encroachment drives across the city to clear public spaces. Officials said additional vigilance is being maintained to avoid such incidents during future actions.

Meanwhile, NMC Commissioner praised police constable Pankaj Ramteke for his prompt response in saving the man’s life.
