Flying lanterns and bursting crackers on public roads prohibited; only green crackers allowed for sale

Nagpur Police Commissioner Vishwas Nangre Patil has prohibited bursting of firecrackers within 200 feet of petrol pumps, LPG cylinder godowns, kerosene depots, firecracker shops and warehouses storing inflammable and chemical substances during the Diwali festival.

The restrictions, imposed under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, will remain in force from November 6 to November 14, 2026.

The order also prohibits bursting crackers in silence zones around schools, colleges, hospitals and courts. Firecracker garlands and other varieties generating excessive noise, air pollution and solid waste have been banned. The use of flying lanterns has also been prohibited.

The Commissioner has directed firecracker retailers and wholesale dealers to stock and sell only green crackers, keeping in view Nagpur's classification as a moderately polluted city.

The order further reiterates the Bombay High Court's Nagpur Bench directive prohibiting the bursting of firecrackers on public roads. Violators will face legal action under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

The restrictions aim to prevent fire accidents, protect public safety and ensure peaceful Diwali celebrations across the city.
