Nagpur: New Kamptee police have arrested a 24-year-old MCOCA accused who allegedly escaped from the custody of police while undergoing treatment at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Nagpur.

The accused, identified as Bomtya alias Sheikh Sameer Sheikh Rahim (24), a resident of Chittranjan Nagar, Kamptee, and currently lodged at Nagpur Central Jail, was undergoing treatment in Ward No. 10 of Medical Hospital under the jurisdiction of Ajni police station.

According to police, the incident took place between 9.30 am and 10.30 am on September 19. While the accused was under police guard, hospital cleaning staff reportedly told the police personnel guarding him that cleaning work had to be carried out and asked them to wait outside the ward.

During this time, the accused allegedly escaped from police custody through a window without a grille in the washroom.

Following a complaint lodged by police constable Abdul Sohel Nisar (30), Ajni police registered a case against the accused under Section 262 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

After the escape, Nagpur city police formed several teams and launched a search operation to trace the accused. During the parallel investigation, New Kamptee police received reliable information about his whereabouts and traced him to Durg in Chhattisgarh, where he was taken into custody.

The accused was subsequently handed over to the Ajni police for further legal proceedings. Further investigation is underway.

The operation was carried out under the guidance of Nagpur Police Commissioner Vishwas Nangre Patil, Joint Commissioner of Police Navinchandra Reddy, Additional Commissioner of Police (North Division) Vinita Shahu, Deputy Commissioner of Police Ramesh Dhumal and Assistant Commissioner of Police, Kamptee Division, Ankush Khedkar.

The team included Senior Police Inspector Mahesh Andhale, Police Sub-Inspector Yogesh Nalte and police personnel Vivek, Ashish and Tushar.
