Nagpur: Amid growing concerns over a possible fuel shortage linked to tensions and war-like conditions in West Asia, Maharashtra has witnessed an unusual surge in petrol and diesel sales across several districts, prompting the state government to prepare for surprise inspections and a crackdown on alleged fuel hoarding.
According to data from May 23, petrol sales across Maharashtra increased by 23%, while diesel sales recorded a massive 52% jump compared to normal consumption patterns. Officials believe the sudden rise is not due to an actual supply shortage but is largely driven by panic buying and excessive stockpiling by consumers and businesses.
In some districts, fuel sales reportedly crossed the 100% increase mark, raising concerns within the administration about artificial demand pressure and possible hoarding activities.
Nagpur district also saw a notable rise in fuel consumption. Petrol sales increased by 16%, while diesel sales went up by 19%, reflecting the broader statewide trend.
State authorities have clarified that there is currently no official fuel shortage in Maharashtra. However, fears triggered by international geopolitical tensions and rising crude oil prices appear to have led many people to purchase and store more fuel than usual.
In response, the Maharashtra government is planning coordinated action through the Police Department and the Civil Supplies Department. Officials are expected to conduct surprise checks and organized inspections to identify illegal fuel storage and prevent panic-driven disruptions in supply.
Sources indicate that the administration wants to ensure smooth fuel availability across the state and discourage unnecessary panic buying, which can create temporary shortages and affect essential services.
Authorities are also urging citizens to avoid excessive purchasing and buy fuel only as per regular requirements, emphasizing that the state’s fuel supply chain remains operational.
