Nagpur: The Guardian Minister will inaugurate the newly built Ganeshnagar Police Chowki at Koradi on Saturday, October 26, at 10 am, followed by the online inauguration of five new traffic police chowkis across the city from the Police Headquarters conference hall at 10:45 am.
The newly established chowkis — located at Ganeshnagar (Koradi), Panjra, Kapsi, Gondkhairi, and Jamtha — are part of the city police’s ambitious road safety drive, ‘Operation U-Turn.’ The initiative aims to strengthen traffic enforcement, improve emergency response, and reduce road fatalities through strategic planning and public awareness.
Launched on July 10, 2024, under the leadership of Commissioner of Police Dr. Ravinder Kumar Singal and DCP (Traffic) Lohit Matani, Operation U-Turn has yielded remarkable improvements in road safety. A comparative study between January–August 2024 and January–August 2025 revealed that fatal accidents fell from 253 to 195, and deaths dropped from 334 to 274, saving 60 lives. Serious injuries also saw a decline from 436 to 417.
Zone-wise statistics highlight significant progress, with Ajni (-40%), Sakhardara (-39%), and Sonegaon (-69%) recording the sharpest fall in fatal crashes. The campaign’s success is credited to daily nakabandis at 33 locations between 7 pm and 2 am, during which more than 1,000 motorists are checked each night.
The drive has also led to 2,471 drunk driving cases this year, up from 1,143 last year, while 60 rash drivers are booked daily under Section 281 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS). The department has further acted against underage driving, with over 50 parents prosecuted under Section 199A of the Motor Vehicles Act for allowing minors to drive.
Officials said the inauguration of these chowkis will further enhance vigilance, improve law enforcement reach, and make Nagpur’s roads safer for commuters under the ongoing Operation U-Turn initiative.
