Nagpur: A 40-year-old woman was killed and a couple sustained serious injuries after a former tenant allegedly barged into his ex-landlord’s house armed with a sword and knife and launched a deadly attack over an old grudge in Nagpur’s MIDC area on Tuesday morning.
The incident took place in the Amarnagar area under the jurisdiction of MIDC Police Station, triggering panic in the locality. The deceased has been identified as Sangeeta Raju Chaudhary (40), while the injured victims are Dharampal Sudam Dahat (51) and his wife Vanita Dahat.
Police have arrested the accused, identified as Roshan Neelkanth Taral (30), a native of Movad in Narkhed taluka who was currently residing in Rajivnagar in the MIDC area.
According to police, Taral had lived as a tenant at Dharampal Dahat’s house in Amarnagar for a few months around a year ago. During his stay, Dahat had reportedly reprimanded him several times over allegedly playing the radio loudly, misbehaviour and other issues.
Police suspect that Taral had been harbouring a grudge against the family and allegedly planned the attack as an act of revenge.
On Monday morning, Taral allegedly reached Dahat’s house carrying a sword and knife. Dharampal was sitting in the hall when the accused allegedly attacked him with the sword. Dahat raised his hands in an attempt to protect himself, suffering serious injuries to his fingers. The accused then allegedly struck him on the face.
Hearing her husband’s cries for help, Vanita rushed towards him. The accused allegedly attacked her with a knife, causing a serious head injury.
The couple somehow managed to escape from the house. Meanwhile, Sangeeta Chaudhary, who had come to the house as a guest, came out of the kitchen. Taral allegedly attacked her with the sword.
Severely injured, Sangeeta collapsed on the road after stepping outside the house. She suffered massive blood loss and died at the spot.
After the attack, Taral allegedly came out of the house but threatened residents who had gathered outside before re-entering the house and locking the door from inside.
Showing quick thinking, some residents reportedly managed to lock the door from outside and immediately alerted the police. Their prompt action prevented the accused from escaping.
On receiving the information, MIDC Police Station Senior Police Inspector Gokul Mahajan and his team rushed to the spot. Police broke open the door and arrested Taral from the scene.
Sangeeta’s body was sent for post-mortem examination, while the injured Dharampal and Vanita Dahat are undergoing treatment at Shalinitai Meghe Hospital in Wanadongri.
Senior police officer Vasant Pardeshi and Deputy Commissioner of Police S Rushikesh Reddy also visited the crime scene and inspected the spot.
A forensic team was called to the scene and given necessary instructions for evidence collection. MIDC Police are conducting further investigations into the attack and the motive behind the alleged revenge killing.
