Nagpur: An elderly man frequently spotted dragging a bicycle with a flat tyre across city roads, asking for money to repair it, has been relocated to the Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s (NMC) shelter home, Astha Nivara Gruha, reports Ketki Bahiramwar and Tejas Patil.
Identified as 61-year-old Gangadhar Daulatrao Tiwaskar, he is currently undergoing counselling to help him reintegrate with his family.
Tiwaskar, who became a familiar figure at traffic signals, temples, mosques, and marketplaces, initially gained attention on social media through posts by local influencers. Civic authorities subsequently intervened. Once a skilled carpenter, Tiwaskar’s life took a turn after an accident rendered him unable to work. However, his unique approach to passing time—begging for money to repair his bicycle’s flat tyre—has now been revealed as more of a pastime than a necessity.
According to sources, Tiwaskar began his routine five years ago after purchasing a bicycle. When the tyre punctured, he sought financial help to fix it. The generosity of strangers inspired him to continue this practice, which soon became a daily habit. Despite his requests for small amounts, many viewed him as a man in need and willingly helped.
Originally from Borgaon, Sausar, in Chhindwara district, Madhya Pradesh, Tiwaskar’s early life was modest. The youngest of six siblings, he studied until the 8th standard before working on farms and later as a carpenter. Moving to Nagpur, he worked at a furniture shop alongside his brother.
Tiwaskar’s personal life saw its share of ups and downs. His first marriage ended in separation due to childlessness and arguments. A second marriage to his wife, Anusuya, brought stability, and the couple had a daughter and son. He ensured both children were educated and successfully married off his daughter.
However, an accident caused a leg injury, forcing Tiwaskar into premature retirement. Feeling confined at home, he began wandering the city with his bicycle, a journey that has now been curtailed.
Authorities at the shelter home are hopeful that counselling will help Tiwaskar adjust to a more stable lifestyle.
