Nagpur: In a major crackdown on drug-impaired driving and to strengthen road safety measures, the Nagpur City Traffic Police conducted a special enforcement drive titled “Operation U-Turn” under the Sitabuldi Traffic Zone on May 12, 2026.
The operation focused on identifying motorists allegedly driving under the influence of narcotic substances. Traffic officials used advanced Drug Testing Analyzer machines for on-the-spot testing and immediate detection of drug consumption among drivers.
Three Drivers Test Positive for THC During Enforcement Drive
During late-evening patrolling and naka checking operations, traffic police intercepted three motorists for reckless and dangerous driving. All three individuals reportedly tested positive for THC (Ganja).
FIR No. 0274 – Alpha Three-Wheeler Driver Held at Kannamwar Chowk
The first case was registered at approximately 5:50 PM near Kannamwar Chowk. A 42-year-old man was allegedly found driving an Alpha three-wheeler in a hazardous manner before being stopped by police officials.
FIR No. 0275 – Motorcycle Rider Intercepted Near Civil Lines
In the second incident, a 23-year-old motorcyclist riding a Hero Honda Glamour bike was intercepted near Hiramal Dining Hall at around 6:25 PM.
FIR No. 0276 – Auto-Rickshaw Driver Booked Outside Traffic Office
The third accused, a 57-year-old auto-rickshaw driver, was apprehended around 6:20 PM in front of the Traffic Office in Civil Lines after police suspected impaired driving.
Charges Filed Under NDPS Act and Motor Vehicles Act
All three accused have been booked under multiple legal provisions, including:
- Section 27 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985 – related to the consumption of narcotic drugs.
- Section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 – for driving under the influence of drugs to a level that impairs proper vehicle control.
- Section 173 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) – pertaining to the formal registration of FIRs.
Senior Officials Lead Operation
The enforcement drive was led by Police Inspector Arvind Puri and Assistant Police Inspector Vikram Shivlal Jadhav, with support from Police Constable Vinay Rathod.
Senior Inspector Vitthalsing Mohanlal Rajput is supervising the ongoing investigation into the cases.
Nagpur Police Warn Against Drug-Impaired Driving
Nagpur Police reiterated that driving under the influence of drugs poses a serious threat not only to the driver but also to pedestrians and other commuters on the road.
Officials stated that “Operation U-Turn” will continue across multiple traffic zones in Nagpur with increased intensity in the coming weeks to promote safer roads and curb substance abuse among motorists.
