Couple Returning From Grand-daughter's Birthday Killed in Road Accident, Car Driver Arrested

Nagpur: A tragic road accident in the Beltarodi area of Nagpur claimed the lives of two individuals after a speeding car rammed into their motorcycle late at night. The accused driver has been taken into custody by police.


The victims, identified as Vijay Bhagwan Savarkar (53) and his wife Surekha Vijay Savarkar (48), residents of Harihar Nagar, had attended their granddaughter’s birthday celebration at a function hall on Kharbi Road. After the event, around 12:30 AM on April 9, 2026, the couple was returning home on their Passion Pro motorcycle (MH-40-X-4506).


While traveling between Besa Chowk and Purushottam Bazar Chowk near a MedPlus store, a Kia Sonet car (MH-49-BW-4226), allegedly driven at high speed and in a rash and negligent manner, collided head-on with their motorcycle. The impact left both victims critically injured.


The driver abandoned the vehicle at the scene and fled. Local residents rushed the injured to a nearby medical hospital, where doctors declared both victims dead upon arrival.


Following a complaint filed by Nitin Suresh Kalambe (30), the son-in-law of the deceased, Beltarodi Police registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Motor Vehicles Act, including charges related to causing death by negligence and drunken driving.


Police Sub-Inspector Narayan Ghodke led the investigation and successfully apprehended the accused driver, identified as Pankaj Balkrishna Dekate (47), a resident of New Narsala, Hudkeshwar, Nagpur. Further investigation into the case is ongoing.
