Bear Attack near Nagpur: Woman Killed, Husband Injured; Forest Department Extends Compensation

Nagpur: A tragic wildlife incident was reported on February 8, 2026, in the Chichda Sub-Forest Range under the Ramtek Forest Division, where a 32-year-old woman was fatally attacked by a wild bear. The attack occurred around 3:10 PM in


Compartment No. 292 PF, located in Manegaon Beta. The deceased, identified as Sulochana Rajkumar Bhalavi, succumbed to her injuries on the spot, while her husband, Rajkumar Ramnath Bhalavi, aged around 40, sustained minor injuries while attempting to escape.


Upon receiving the alert, teams from the Forest Department, Ramtek Police Station, and Dewlapar Police immediately reached the spot. Officials conducted an on-site investigation and later transported the woman’s body to the Sub-District Hospital in Ramtek for post-mortem examination. Authorities confirmed that further investigation into the circumstances of the bear attack is currently ongoing.


In accordance with government guidelines for human–wildlife conflict cases, Assistant Conservator of Forests Govind Luche handed over an ex-gratia compensation cheque to the victim’s husband, Rajkumar Bhalavi. Honorary Wildlife Warden Avinash Londhe, Range Forest Officer (Ramtek) Rahul Shinde, Range Forest Officer (Pawani) Sagar Bansod, along with field assistants and forest guards, were present during the compensation handover.


The Forest Department is continuing to examine wildlife movement in the area to prevent such incidents and ensure safety for local residents.
