Nagpur: In a remarkable instance of organ donation, three patients received a new lease on life after the family of a brain-dead patient consented to donate his organs at Nagpur’s Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). This marks the institution’s 19th successful organ donation procedure.
The incident began on November 16, when Ravindra Raut, a 61-year-old tailor from Rajapeth, Amravati, was critically injured in a hit-and-run accident involving an autorickshaw. Initially admitted to a private hospital in Amravati, Raut was later transferred to the Trauma Care Center at Nagpur Medical College for advanced treatment. Despite three days of intensive care, he failed to respond to treatment.
Neurosurgeon Dr. Piyush diagnosed Raut as brain-dead, following which coordinators Bhagyashree Nighot from the MOHAN Foundation and social service superintendent Shyam Panjala counseled the grieving family over two days. Raut’s sons, Vaibhav and Shyam, ultimately made the courageous decision to donate his organs.
A team of doctors, including Medical Superintendent Dr. Avinash Gawande, Dr. Rohan Roy, Dr. Soma Cham, Dr. Prasenjit Dhawale, Dr. Akshay Shende, and Dr. Vrushali Mahatme, confirmed the brain-death diagnosis. Under the supervision of Dr. Abdul Qureshi, Trauma Care Center in-charge, and Dr. Pratik Debaji, the surgical procedure was successfully executed.
The donated organs included two kidneys, allocated to Super Hospital and Wockhardt Hospital, and a liver, which was transplanted at New Era Hospital, benefiting three critically ill patients.
Medical Superintendent Dr. Avinash Gawande commended the coordination efforts led by Dr. Sumit Chahakar, which ensured the smooth completion of the donation process. Speaking on the occasion, Dean Dr. Raj Gajbhiye emphasized the importance of organ donation awareness and the hospital’s structured approach to managing such cases.
“This initiative highlights the need for a systematic process to increase organ donation rates. Efforts are also being made to raise public awareness about the critical importance of organ donation,” Dr. Gajbhiye stated.
