Nagpur: On Tuesday, January 14, the skies over Nagpur came alive with vibrant kites and excited shouts of “O Paar” and “O Kaat” as the city celebrated Makar Sankranti. Amid the festive fervor, Nagpur Police implemented robust safety measures to protect citizens, especially from the hazards posed by nylon manja.

Youngsters took to rooftops and open grounds, immersing themselves in the thrill of kite-flying battles. To ensure safety, the police encouraged the use of safety arches on two-wheelers. These specially designed steel wires, installed between the handles of two-wheelers, act as barriers to prevent nylon manja from reaching the rider’s neck. Traffic police personnel demonstrated and installed these life-saving devices at key locations across the city, providing hands-on guidance to motorists.

In addition, the Nagpur Police ordered the closure of flyovers across the city from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Tuesday to mitigate the risk of nylon manja-related incidents. In Zone 3, under the leadership of Mahak Swami, safety wires were installed across the Shantinagar flyover to safeguard commuters.

The festival also turned terraces into vibrant hubs as families and friends gathered to compete in kite-flying. Armed with colorful kites and spools of manja, enthusiasts battled to dominate the skies. On the ground, children raced to retrieve fallen kites, adding to the dynamic atmosphere.

Despite concerns surrounding the dangers of nylon manja, the people of Nagpur celebrated Makar Sankranti with unmatched enthusiasm. Kids darted across open grounds, families relished the festivities, and the city echoed with joy, reaffirming the cherished tradition of kite-flying in the heart of Nagpur.
