Nagpur: Divisional Commissioner Vijayalakshmi Bidari has urged citizens not to panic over the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), a common virus causing upper respiratory tract infections here, on Tuesday, January 7. While emphasizing the need for vigilance, she advised people to strictly follow the health guidelines issued by the Public Health Department.
HMPV is a seasonal illness typically seen during winter and early summer, similar to Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) and influenza. Reports suggest a rise in HMPV cases in China, sparking concerns. The virus, first identified in the Netherlands in 2001, is a leading cause of severe respiratory infections.
Precautionary Measures Recommended:
To prevent the spread of respiratory infections, the Public Health Department has issued the following do’s and don’ts:
Do’s:
• Cover your mouth and nose with a handkerchief or tissue while coughing or sneezing.
• Wash hands frequently with soap and water or use sanitizer.
• Avoid public places if you have symptoms like fever, cough, or sneezing.
• Stay hydrated and eat nutritious food.
• Ensure proper ventilation in homes and workplaces.
Don’ts:
• Avoid handshakes.
• Do not reuse tissues or handkerchiefs.
• Avoid close contact with sick individuals.
• Refrain from frequently touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
• Do not spit in public places.
• Avoid self-medication without consulting a doctor.
The Health Department is conducting regular surveillance for influenza-like illnesses (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Infections (SARI). Citizens showing symptoms such as cough, fever, sore throat, runny nose, or breathing difficulties are advised to seek medical attention promptly.
Commissioner Bidari has reassured the public that while precautions are necessary, there is no need to fear the HMPV virus.
