Nagpur: In a deliberate attempt to escalate violence, rioters in Nagpur spread misinformation, shared violent videos, and glorified attacks on police through social media, aiming to provoke further unrest. Nagpur Cyber Police have identified over 230 such accounts and registered FIRs against 50 individuals, confirmed DCP Cyber Lohit Matani on Thursday, March 20.
Social Media Used to Incite Violence:
According to officials, videos of stone-pelting and arson targeting police personnel were widely circulated to justify and encourage more violence. The Cyber Police have lodged four FIRs against individuals responsible for spreading inflammatory content and inciting riots.
Sedition Case Filed Against Key Accused:
Among those booked is Fahim Khan, who police suspect was one of the masterminds behind the violence. He has been arrested along with five others and faces sedition charges along with multiple offenses under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Arms Act.
Protest Turns Violent, Over 30 Cops Injured:
The violence erupted on March 19, 2025, following a Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal rally against Aurangzeb’s tomb. Tensions escalated after rumors spread about the burning of a symbolic tomb, leading to stone-pelting clashes between two groups.
Over 30 police personnel were injured, and more than 70 vehicles were damaged. Authorities continue their crackdown and urge citizens to refrain from spreading misinformation.
